Out Today: Meet the Sight Words

Identifying “sight words” has never been easier thanks to Meet the Sight Words, a new animated DVD series for early learners that engages young eyes with simple, striking visuals.

Meet the Sight Words DVD series is a powerful tool that teaches children ages 15 months to 6 years to identify over forty five basic sight words.  ‘Sight Words’ are common words that can’t be identified by picture cues or don’t follow basic decoding rules.  These words are taught in pre-k and kindergarten classrooms as “sight words,” "instant words,” “high frequency words” or “star words.”  A new reader finds sight words very frustrating until they are memorized.  A good reader will be able to instantly recognize sight words without having to ‘figure them out.’

A Beautiful Voice

If you watched the opening ceremony of this year's Olympic Games you must have fallen in love with the voice of Sarah Brightman. She sang the theme song You and Me with Chinese vocalist Liu Huan. Sarah debuted in London's dance troupe Hot Gossip in the 1960's releasing multiple disco albums, advanced to a Broadway roll in The Phantom Of the Opera then began a solo career. If you loved her voice at the ceremony, you should try out her latest album Symphony. Her soothing voice will calm the nerves that comes along with being a mom!

Let the Games Begin With the Backyardigan Olympics

Now that the Olympic games are in full swing, you may be glued to the television but what about your child? Face it, it's kind of boring for a 3 year-old to watch a rowing competition from beginning to end. He might be interested for 2 seconds but that's about it.

Nick Jr. has coupled some of their most popular cartoon characters with the games. Your tots will definitely enjoy watching Nick Jr's all new Olympics-themed marathon of shows featuring The Backyardigans, Dora the Explorer and Ni Hao, Kai-lan. In Match on Mt. Olympus, the Backyardigans explores the birthplace of all sports: Greece. Pablo and Tyrone end up challenging the Gods of Nap, Laughter and Weather to a game of basketball, all accompanied by music and singing of course!

In Dora the Explorer's, "We're a Team," Dora (a.k.a. mini Indiana Jones) and her little pals use teamwork to complete the Super Adventure Race. Lastly, in Ni Hao Kai-lan's "Sport's Day," the little friends compete in the Dinosaur Games where they learn why it's more important to enjoy the game than brag.
