A new study by a Penn State College of Medicine research team found that honey may offer parents an effective and safer alternative to over-the-counter cough supressants. The study found that a small dose of buckwheat honey given before bedtime provided better relief of nighttime cough and sleep difficulty in children than no treatment or dextromethorphan (DM), a cough suppressant found in many over-the-counter cold medications.
Honey was more effective at reducing the symptoms caused by upper respiratory infection. Last year the FDA announced over-the-counter cough medicines not be given to children under the age of 6 because lack of effectiveness at relieving symptoms so honey as an alternative is looking like a good alternative. As always, raw honey shouldn't be given to children under the age of 1.
